Shipping Container Locks: Internal or External?

Introduction

Different use cases require totally different locks, and even a different lock placement!

Before you purchase locks for your shipping containers or trucks you want to ask yourself: do I want the locks to be placed inside or outside the container?

Since we offer both types, here are our thoughts on advantages and disadvantages of both options.

Internal locks

Internal locks are all those locks which locking mechanism is sheltered inside the container. The lock is invisible from the outside except for the opening part, which can be a traditional key hole (not recommended), an input socket for a wired key or a wireless reader (like with Seguratainer’s NFC antenna).

Advantages of internal locks:

  • locking points protected by the container doors themselves.

  • very discreet from the outside.

  • a fixed solution: your container is permanently secured.

Disadvantages: a fixed lock requires a longer installation time.

Example of internal locks: Seguratainer Slam Locks, with 2 or 4 locking points (with simple DYI installations steps).

External locks

An external lock is one where the locking mechanism is outside the container. This means all the parts of the lock are visible and accessible when the container doors are closed. Traditionally, most locks are external locks, from the padlocks to other systems.

Advantages of external locks:

  • installation and removal take a few seconds.

  • a visible deterrent for potential thieves.

  • portable locks can rotate between containers.

Disadvantages: external locks are exposed to all weather and possible hits during transportation.

Example of external locks: Seguratainer Claw Locks, with 2 or 4 locking points (armoured design and electrophoretic paint coating for high corrosion resistance).
